It being Spring/Summer, I've been giving some very very serious thought to upgrading the factory speakers and adding a high-power amp to the factory stereo. I realize that adding an amp to the factory stereo is not religiously correct, but it seems like a good enough unit, and I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. Can anyone give me some info on the clearances they encountered when installing 6.5 inch speakers in the doors? My usual source of this info (the Crutchfield catalog installation guide) doesn't give specifics for mounting depth and mounting height clearances. I have power windows so I don't have to worry about window crank handles. I'm hoping to delay pulling everything apart until I have the new speakers in my hands, but if no-one knows the clearances, I'll have to do an exploratory with my tape-measure. I think I need 6.5 inch speakers because I'm at a loss as to where I can hide a subwoofer (though if anyone has clever ideas, I'd luv to hear them) and I therefore need the door speakers to produce as much bass as possible. Will a Bazooka (or something similiar) in the trunk really work? There doesn't seem to be much in the way of acoustic leakage between the trunk and interior. I seem to remember a Pioneer demo Miata which had 6X9's in the rear shelf, but I haven't looked under there to see what kind of room/mounting area is available. I guess that's enough musings from me...
