It's the former but it's not very loud. It happens while the car is rolling forward in gear when you press the clutch partway down, as I said, before and during the initial resistance of the pedal. There's a rather distracting "chirp...chirp" with each gearchange. It happens only after the car has warmed up. (Ward)
