From: (none) Subject: re:winter driving Date: (none)
Thanks to all who responded for the winter driving information. I too consider myself a fairly accomplished winter driver, having leaned to drive and driven many a mile high in the Rockies. (Texas was but a brief period in my life, just long enough to buy a Miata). I've driven a number of cars through snow considered impassable by many, but was concerned about the Miata because of it's wide tires and high torque to weight ratio. From all the information from the list, my worst fears have been confirmed. The descriptions of the Miata's snow handling characteristics are almost identical, from New Jersey to the Sierras. My Miata spent it's winters in Texas tucked in the garage, driven only in the nicest of weather, while my 77 dodge colt leapt tall curbs in a single bound, stopped sideward sliding pickup trucks, and generally dealt with the bad weather and the resulting ice in a fashion quite becoming of a beatercar. However, due to the recent addition of a family to the liabilities side of my budget, I'm faced with either selling the Miata, or selling the 77 dodge colt and driving the Miata all winter. Since driving the Miata in the winter doesn't seem like a very good idea, it will be the one sold, and the beatercar will continue to be the reliable, nearly indestructable transportation that it's been for years. Life today is a result of yesterday's choices.
