I'd recommend a lift instead of a pit.  In fact, many fire departments
won't allow building permits for pits these days ( or so I'm told)
because flamabale fumes will sit in there for long, long times.

The lifts that bolt to the garage floor seem to work pretty well, however
you have to have a high garage roof.  I've said that my next garage will have
a lift righ tin the center, under the peaked roof.....
