I had to have some bodywork done on the left rear of the car some time back, and I think I remember the drain tube for the the gas filler compartment running down inside the trunk and out through a hole in the bottom of the trunk. I've never experienced the smell, but if this tube were loose, cracked, plugged, or not exiting outside the trunk, I could see where you might get a small amount of gas in the trunk when filling up. It doesn't take much gasoline to stink up a trunk as small as the miata's. Steve Grossman Software Engineer
