In both Colorado (where I now live) and Texas (where I lived when I bought the car), the Miata is considered a sports car, but I can't really tell what that means, since the cost for comprehensive coverage on the Miata is only about 30% more than liability on my 77 dodge colt beatercar. My last insurance agent told me that the rates for a car were determined in a large part by the average demographics of the ownership (did that make sense?). Since the Miata is more popular with college grads, middle aged (damn, do I fit that category already?) folks, and women, it will be less expensive to insure than other vehicles, especially the rice-rockets from Dodge/Mitsubishi and the American hotrods, which are quite popular with a less mature group of drivers ;) (i. e. high-school students and recent h.s. grads). Currently, I think I pay about $600 per year for comprehensive on the Miata, $500 per year for comprehesive on a 87 Jeep truck, and $400 per year for liability on a 77 dodge colt. The Miata is covered as a pleasure vehicle. Hope this helps.: Steve Grossman Software Engineer Storage Technology Corp.
