I've experienced the same thing wrt premium gas.  Seems like a tank or two
will then let me switch back to 87 octane for awhile.  I think some of
this may because of carbon buildup due to city driving.  The carbon heats
up and causes the detonation.  Often after a long highway trip, the
problem seems to go away, too.
