Another note on gas: when I bought my Miata in Oct 90, I started out with 89 Octane. Then around 5000 miles I switched to 87 Octane. I have pretty much stayed with 87 Octane with no ill effects. Occasionally in winter I put in 89 Octane. The only restriction is I stick to Mobil, Exxon or Texaco. I did note in the manual that the minimum octane was 87 and I know that the gas companies are sometimes unreliable on their octane ratings, but since I have not had any problems in 3 years, I figure it must be OK!
