I remember C&D did an article on detectors recently, but I don't > think they talked a lot about the best and not-so-good mounting positions. My Escort Solo says to get it up as high as possible. I have tested the the sensitivity of the radar to direction when I have located a radar emitting officer. While it is sensitive to direction, I dont worry about 10 or 15 degrees. Around town, cops seem to wait on the right side of the road. On the highway, they can be in the median, on the left. Suction cups leave a mess on the window if you take them off. If you leave them on, you advertise that you may have a radar detector somewhere in you car. I use the clip and mount it on the visor, to the left of the swivel arm. It is up high, goes through glass, more toward the center of the road, easy to hear, and out of my line of sight. I lose the use of the visor, but I prefer a cap or bill anyway.
