Besides you could always say "The damned thing fell > off and I haven't gotten it replaced yet." That's what I've always said too. I did get a ticket for it once. But that was because when the cop came up to the car to lie to me about clocking me with radar, I was sitting there pointedly looking at the radar detector on the dash (which hadn't made a sound). I could see the wheels turning in her head... after about 20 seconds of thought she said she was giving me a ticket for the missing front plate. She didn't even ask me where the missing plate was... :-) That experience really shook what confidence I had left in the honesty of cops. She definitely had every intention of telling me she had used radar when she really hadn't.
