First, consult your factory service manual.  There is a section on HLAs.
To some extent the ticking noise, especially at startup from cold, is
normal.

I'm told the replacement HLAs (same as those used in MX-3 V6) provide
no performance increase and "ticking" noise does not affect engine longevity.

If you're still concerned, talk to your dealer.  I have no interest in becoming
a FAX server for the Miata mailing list.  Mention no. service bulletin 011/91,
dated 11/22/91.  BTW, it's only for '90 and '91 Miatas.
