Just a clarification, I didn't actually get my '93 Rx-7 through the Mazda Motorsports program. Most high-demand new cars take a while before they offer them. The program is kind of informal, and Motorsports isn't allowed to 'claim' cars that would otherwise go to dealers, so the program won't start for a specific car until all the dealers in the country can get all their orders filled for that car. With the Miata, it took a year and a half, but it's now available. I don't know if the Rx-7 is now available through the program, but it wasn't when I got mine (shortly after introduction). It's a long story, but I had negotiated the price (actually a fair bit closer to cost than Alan estimates) with a local dealer who I entered into a sponsorship arrangement with). When it became apparent that the Competion Yellow Mica R-1 that I wanted wasn't forthcoming in allocations to the Northwest, a fellow at Mazda Motorsports put me in touch with someone in Houston that happened to have some coming in on their next allocation that weren't yet spoken for. Once the cars came in, I talked a dealer in Dallas into selling it to me for the same deal I had negotiated locally, and two days later I flew to Dallas to drive the car back to Seattle. Thus, Mazda Motorsports had no real involvement in the deal. Also, they're having staffing problems - much of Motorsports has been shut down, and their head technical person at their Competition Parts department has been let go. If you'd like to do something about this, I can give you some information on who to write a letter to. Jim Walsh jimw@microsoft.com From: To: Cc: Subject: Re: Trading a Miata for another one. Just out of curiosity, has anyone successfully >purchased a Miata for this cheap? The prices listed in those magazines are dealer *invoice*, which is not the same as dealer *cost*. The invoice is a a good place to start, but then you need to subtract any dealer rebates, sales performance incentives (sell more than X cars and get Y% back/car) and add manditory advertising costs (gotta pay for those "NorthWest Mazda Dealers" ads). I would expect the total would be several hundred under "invoice". The Mazda Motorsports price would be that amount + $300. The only person I know who's gone through Motorsports to buy a car is a local RX-7 driver (and Team.Netter), Jim Walsh. I think he got his '93 for something like $1000 under sticker. The new RX-7 isn't yet on the MM list so he couldn't get the real good price but he still paid a lot less than a local dealer would have charged. - Alan
