I called the dealer in NJ. (Thanks James for the pointer.) They said they'd never heard of it, but bring it in and they'll order me a new one under warrentee. I told them I knew of four others with the problem; I guess they'll stick it on a note when they send it to the factory.... It will take me a monthe to getthe replacement as I'm not going to be on the east caost for a couple weeks. I will get some sort of tracking ID# so those who are out of warrentee might get a recall. (mazda is incredible with customer service!)
