I occaisionally drive the car at 65 mph in 3rd gear, this is about 5000 rpm.
At Portland International Raceway, I've hit 115mph in 4th gear, pretty close
to 7000 rpm, but there was still some more oomph.  If you're not shifting
between 5500 and 6500 rpm you're missing out on a lot of power.  People that
say the Miata is underpowered haven't ridden with me.....:^)

Of course I rarely get gas mileage better than 22 mpg, sometimes as low as 14
mpg (on the track).

In a nutshell, you're shifting way too soon.
