I have experienced the same problem with the spark plug wires shorting to 
the cylinder head.  It first occurred at 57K miles with the #3 cylinder.  
Instead of replacing the wire set with a new set (which at the Mazda 
dealer cost $71.00)  I cleaned the arc area with rubbing alcohol and 
wrapped the wire with electrical tape.  Since then, two additional wires 
have developed the same problem and I performed the same fix.  It seems 
to be working.  I have over 65K now without the problem recurring on any 
of the taped wires.  I don't really like the fix (it seems like a 
band-aid), but it works.  

Has anyone found out if Mazda will replace the suspect wires as a recall 
item?  My local dealer doesn't seem to know about the problem.  Also, 
would the type or brand of spark plug have anything to do with this 
problem?
