pardon my ignorance, but what are the symptoms of this problem?
that is, i assume it will be quite noticeable if/when it starts
happening?

a bunch of aftermarket places sell replacement plug wires (i don't remember
prices, though).  then too, it might be worth spending a little more if
the quality were better...

i dunno, but i guess it depends on when they typically fail.
if they generally last 50K miles or more, that starts getting into
the realm of "maintenance item".  if they tend to fail a lot earlier,
then maybe it should be a recall item.
