BTW: the new 1.8 liter Miata engine is *not* the Protoge/Escort 1.8 but an all-new Miata-only 1.8l. The Protoge/Escort engine is too tall to fit under the Miata's hood so an all-new engine was designed. I would guess this is a bored-out or otherwise modified 1.6 but I haven't heard any other details.
