Gary,

You can use a paper-clip to jump two pins in one of the terminals under
the hood - that will let a standard inductive timing light work. The
reason you need to do this is that normally, the Miata fires each spark
plug *twice* during one full cycle. Check back issues of the national rag
for the correct pins.

As for whether you need to set the timing, I'd certainly think so. You're
messing with the timing belt after all. :-{)
