Gary, You can use a paper-clip to jump two pins in one of the terminals under the hood - that will let a standard inductive timing light work. The reason you need to do this is that normally, the Miata fires each spark plug *twice* during one full cycle. Check back issues of the national rag for the correct pins. As for whether you need to set the timing, I'd certainly think so.
