i'll agree the factory manuals don't tell you HOW to do stuff so much as show you how everything is put together, but at least that's a starting point. some of the techniques would be obvious to someone who's an experienced mechanic, while they're a little less so to a Bozo like me :-) as for the eyeball air vents: i tried the technique with the string that the Miata Magazine mentioned; it worked ok, but it took me a while to get the string through the slots. a much better solution IMHO is described in the Clearwater amplifier installation instructions. they suggest using a coathanger, and it works great. just bend an end into a tight-angled hook so it fits into the vent, angle the hook around so its behind one of the plastic vanes, and pull. works instantly, no problem. a warning to those who haven't yet pulled your eyeball vents: some come out easily, and others require some serious pressure. you think you're going to break something, and then *pop*, out it comes.
