Closest thing I have to a good story is that my wife and I dropped by one of the dealers we had been talking to, and pulled into their lot just as the truck carrying what turned out to be our car pulled in. This particular dealer wasn't taking names like most of them, preferring to operate on a first-come first-served basis. The car we bought was the first one that dealer had received -- there were two others on the truck, but ours was actually *unloaded* first -- and it was exactly what we wanted (Blue Package A w/ A/C and LSD), so we bought it on the spot for sticker. Remember, back in the bad old days when Miatas were scarce as hens' teeth -- this was June, 1989 -- most dealers were gouging buyers for additional markups as high as $5000, but these guys were so excited to be putting one of the first in the area on the street (especially given they knew I'd be soloing it), that they virtually insisted on making sure that we went home with it that day. We did, and it's been nothing but big fun ever since. This is the same dealer, by the way, who has insisted on replacing my catalytic converter, front brakes, and hydraulic lash adjusters for me even though they know I'm out thrashing the car on weekends and despite the fact that none of the original parts were giving me any particular trouble at the time, because they want to make sure that the car continues to "just feel right" as we begin our fourth year together. They are *not* all pondscum. - Steve Bruun
