First of all, they are *certainly* not legal for Stock classes. Second, they do awful things to your emissions in the name of mild performance increases. You see, all they can do is change the mixture. They don't change the *size* of the fuel-air charge in the cylinder. The only way to get a big performance boost is to increase the amount of fuel+air in the cylinder at ignition time. Thus, intake mods, exhaust mods, and recamming all allow more charge in naturally. A turbocharger just compresses a large charge so it fits in a small cylinder. :-{) Superchargers likewise. In the Miata, mild bolt-on performance (new cams, intake and exhaust) are good for about 20 horsepower total, it seems. After that, you go to turbochargers, superchargers, and the like.
