Did you check your tie-rods? If one is bent the car will tend to drift. I have a 1990 and found after 1 year that the tie-rids tend to bend probably from normal wear and tear. They were replaced under warantee and since then I havn't had any trouble. Perhaps some of the early tie-rods were defective but it is something that you should check. When you have trouble shifting into 4th gear (about 25% of the time) do you get a grinding sound or does it just require somewhat more effort? If you notice a mild grinding sound then you may have a synchronizer problem which should be covered under warantee. The reported 1st to 2nd shift resistance in my car usually only occurs when it is below freezing. When just started cold in warm weather there is only a mild resistance for the first few minutes of driving. After the car warms up (3 to 5 minutes) I notice no problem in the 1st to 2nd gear shift.
