Are there real benifits to using a synthetic if the oil is
changed on a regular basis??

Interesting note for snow-belters who store their Miatas over the
winter.  I believe Miata magazine pointed out that synthetic oils do
not provide as much corrosion protection of regular oils.  If you
store your car, they recommended against synthetic oil during the
storage period.

Probably not a concern for you in Texas.
