Most interesting.  I've always run premium because it pinged on anything less,
at least until the knock sensor retarded the spark and my performance.  From
this is sounds like maybe I was getting crappy gas, even though I tried several
brands (Phillips, Texaco, Exxon) before deciding to ALWAYS buy premium. Now
that I live in a different region, I'll try the same downward progression you
used.
