I too want a "Stealth Stereo" as described by Jeff Cerier. Ideally, I would want a trunk-mount CD changer with a remote control. Unfortunately, most of the changers on the market do not provide volume control on the remote, so they must be used with an in-dash stereo unit. Does anyone know of a CD changer which has volume, tone, balance, etc, circuitry built-in and accessible from the remote? Another possibility would be to construct a small op-amp based pre- amplifier with volume, balance, etc, and install it in the compartment in the console. This would provide the missing controls, while the other CD functions would be controlled from the remote (which could also be mounted in the console compartment). The pre-amplifier would drive commercial power amplifiers. This project should not be too difficult for someone with a fair bit of electronics background, but choosing the right op-amps (capable of audiophile quality performance) and building a power supply capable of filtering out noise from the car's electrical system might be tricky. I wonder if anything like this exists on the market? Someone mentioned the possibility of mounting a dash-mount stereo in the trunk and using its remote control to control it. This, combined with a CD changer, sounds workable. Does anyone know if the remotes for the dash-mount units control all functions of the stereo (including volume, balance, and fade)? Also, will the remote work through the trunk, or does it require line-of-sight contact? -- Gordon Colburn colburn@cis.uab.edu
