As far as I remember, the Miata Manual (1990) specified 75W-90 GL-4 for manual transmission fluid. They may have mentioned a GL-5 as well. However, some mechanics do not recommend GL-5 oils for transmissions (O.K. for differential) since they may have a high sulphur content and slowly affect the synchronizers. I don't know what transmission fluid is installed at the factory but it is certainly NOT ATF. However, it is true that some manual transmissions may use ATF but this is not true for the Miata. Watch out for the Dealers since many know very little and they can ruin your car if you fully trust them. Herb Samuels
