No car is perfect, after all. :-{) I had the o-ring that seals the
dipstick guide tube where it passes into the sump blow out about a week
after I got my car. The dealer had never seen such a thing before. They've
now heard of half a dozen instances across the country. They replaced the
whole dipstick assembly, just incase it was a problem there, rather than
with the o-ring.

I have a small amount of such corrosion too. It hasn't increased in more
than 40,000 miles, including constant winter use in PA. (which salts *and*
cinders their roads. You know what the leachate from cinders and ashes is?
Lye. Yuck!)

Okay, this is hard to describe, but I'll try. First, put on a pair of heavy
gloves, as there are small sharp things in the area. Now, open your trunk.
there's a cable that operates the gas tank cover which runs forward from
the fill pipe. Follow that cable to the latch for the cover. You can pull
on the attachment point, and it will operate the latch.
