I've had the following occur twice in the 70K miles I've had my Miata.  Both times
involved moving the car out of the way.

Cold start, move it, turn it off, go away for awhile.
Cold start, move it, turn it off, go away for awhile.

On the 3rd cold start a truly terrible racket comes from under the hood.
Sounds like a lifter to me.  Very rough idle.  The only solution I've tried
has been to wait for the car to warm up.  As it warms, the racket subsides
and the idle smooths out.  I assume that during the original moves some
air got into one or more lifters.
