I always get 1/4-1/2 second of lifter noise on startup, but
it's quiet by comparison. I use 10/40 oil changed at 2500-3000
miles.
Mazda has recommended 10W-30 oil for the Miata. If you are
experiencing Hydraulic Lash Adjuster noise, they suggest 5W-30
weight oil. Perhaps this could help your situation a bit.
