You can actually feel the difference the oil makes in the Porsche air-cooled engine, and in air-cooled motorcycles. It's a hard thing to describe, but you can feel when the oil starts to break down. I guess the engine doesn't run quite as smoothly. As for your Miata, I'd run it for 1500-2000 mi to get your money's worth out of the conventional oil change, then switch back to the synthetic. My _guess_ is that it takes that long for the conventional oil to start breaking down. On a related note, I'm wondering what others opinions are on brands of synthetics??? I've always used Mobil 1, but I know that there are other brands now. Any discussion? Jeff Cerier
