When I installed a stereo in by base model Miata in the summer of '90, I used Boston Acoustics model 767 speakers. These were the biggest ones I could find which would fit in the door openings without cutting (6.5 inch, I believe), and even came with 3 mounting holes, although the bolt circle is a little smaller than Mazda uses. These are 2-way units with dome tweeters, and I am very satisfied with the sound. I did have to cut and bend the lip of the speaker frame a bit to be able to use the existing mounting holes in the door (drill my new car? never!). These speakers are open at the back, so you will need a couple of these foam plastic enclosures (from a car stereo dealer or J.C. Whitney) to keep them dry (also improves the bass). My Denon stereo cassette drives them just fine by itself. BTW, having a DIN-mount stereo instead of that Mazda thing means I could keep that handy storage bin in front of the shifter (with a little careful cutting). Milton Horst Seattle, WA
