You have it correct. When the car is on and the parking brake is released, the front parking lights come on. The tail lights stay off. The Canadian Government decided that as of 1990 model year all cars must come equiped with automatic daytime running lights. For cars without pop-up headlights, they use low intensity headlights. That don't work for the Miata. I don't know if you notice the problem that the Miata faces with this, but the parking lights are also the signal lights. So the first cars (the first year or so) that shipped, when you put on the signal light, both front lights would go out and then one would blink. The government made them change (recall) it so that one light stays on and the other blinks. The running light recall is the only recall that Canadian Miatas have had (at least 1990 Miatas). BTW, could someone post/mail me an address of a supplier of McG's Plastic Polish. After phoning all the auto supply places around here and getting 'We don't sell car polish, try K-Mart' I have lost faith. One auto body shop suggested I try Armor-All. Yeah, right.
