When mine was backed into ( with greater than $1200 in damages), the alarm went off, and the guy driving the van drove away, claiming he didn't know he hit anything. Between the loud bump when his van hit my car and the corresponding 120 db yelp from the alarm, I can hardly imagine that he didn't know he hit it. Fortunately, it was in the parking lot of the motor vehicle department, and a state trooper on his lunch break SAW the whole thing, and caught and informed the van driver that he was leaving the scene of an accident.
