Steve Davis writes on the top-down issue: Coupla comments on the top-down issue that is so much fun. I had owned my miata for 3 weeks before I drove it with the top up. I can't imagine driving with the top up unless EXTREME conditions require it. I can think of only two extreme reasons: 1) It is raining so hard that you need your high speed wipers AND you are driving at less than 65 mph (this has been tested extensively, and unless both conditions are met, you won't get wet). It helps to keep the drivers window down. The only thing that gets wet is the roll bar. 2) A man is in the car who combs his hair over the top of his head and he's higher in the company than me. Other than that, the top's down. Here's my tips: "It's too hot" - keep the darn top down and turn on the AC! Or, if you're beach bound or road-tripping, carry a spray bottle of water with you. I call that my AC, it works wonders to spritz yourself. Good for about 15 degrees. "It's too cold" - wear a coat and a scarf. A windbreaker is often all you need. I keep an extra in my trunk so the passenger can't make me put the top up. "It's raining" - drive faster. Also, I keep an umbrella behind the driver's seat in case I'm stuck at a light. "It'll mess up my hair" - Wear a hat or scarf. Bring a brush. Buy a Volvo wagon. "I'll get a sun-burn" - carry sunscreen in the glove-box. "What about safety if we roll?" - Install a rollbar (Pylon motorsports, $100, and it fits under the top). That's all for now.... I'll let you know if I hear any more complaints.
