I drove my 1990 A package Miata with 44,000 miles on the odometer from Lafayette, Louisiana to Salina Kansas and back last week. (About 2,000 miles round trip) The car is absolutely stock, timing at 10 degrees, new plugs and Mobil 1 oil. I was also loaded down with a weeks worth of clothes (which I managed to squeeze into the trunk) My mileage ranged from a high of 33 mpg, to a low of 30 mpg (which included some in town driving) or an average of just over 32 mpg. The top was down the whole time, and since the entire trip was on long, boring, straight interstates, I just set the cruise at 65 and enjoyed the ride. I suspect if I had emptied the trunk, carried no luggage, kept the top up, and driven in the daytime with the lights off the whole way, I may have been able to get one extra mile per gallon or so. I don't think that 40 mpg is possible at highway speeds. (55+ mph) Brian
