I just put valvoline synthetic 10-30 in my brand new miata. After the gorrilas
at the local rapid lube place spent an hour getting the factory filter off
(with success), I had them put in the synthetic oil. this was the first oil
change (i have ~2500 on the odometer). I had noticed an increasing amount of
lifter noise on starting from the cold and after warm driving which have now
disappered. the dealer said this would occur. Also, the "jiffy" place put in
1/8 - 1/4"  of excess oil in the sump but the service manager at my dealer who
is far away says this is guaranteed not to be a  problem nor have I had any
problem. But time only will tell and also a controlled study would be necessary
for any firm conclusion to be reached.
