I wouldn't write it off until you've tried it.  I've never had power
steering before either, but with modern speed-sensitive PS, it is much
less intrusive at speed. 

Most importantly, you get a faster steering ratio with the PS!  :-)

PS - ...not to mention how handy it is when parrallel parking with 205/55
	stickies on all four corners...
