After I wrote about my (formerly) secret location for my CD controller (I won't say where it is... read on), Piet Ruyssinck wrote: > Mike, > Don't say that ! - you never know who's listening. > Me too, I've hidden stuff in my miata, but I'm not going to tell anyone about > (except my wife) ; not even to trustworthy fellow miata-owners. I keep it closed at gas stations and everywhere so locals won't know it's there (I have a personalized plate making the car easy to remember), but I didn't think there was any concern here. As for the location becoming 'standard' and known to thieves, I doubt this will become a standard location, but it is a point worth commenting on. My reason for hiding the controller was not to keep *it* from being stolen, but just keep the whole system stealthy. If you have an Alpine head unit with CD controls, a thief knows there is a CD player in the trunk. If he doesn't see anything but a stock unit, I doubt he will go looking for a CD controller or changer. Of course, if you are blasting non-stock sound as you drive around, you're advertising an aftermarket system, too. I turn mine down in questionable locations. J Goeke responded to Piet: > NFI, but mellow out. Being paranoid won't help prevent any potential thief > from looking in the obvious, and a pro will find it anyway. You're right, it won't stop anyone who really wants to check it out. I just want to keep people who pass by or kids checking out the obvious from seeing that there is something unexpected there, since I have the top down all the time (PLEASE, nobody start the top up/down Miata Civil War again). I cover the whole car a lot, but frequently it is just open for all to see. Mike Simmons
