i have a Cincinnatti Microwave (now Escort) self-powered 'Solo'
and like it immensely, even if it isn't up to detecting all the latest
bands - after all, K & X are still the most common.  the convenience
of cordless operation, especially in a car like the Miata, is
really great.

i think these are still available, but as far as i know, Escort
doesn't make any of their newer models in cordless form (if anyone
knows to the contrary, please speak up!).  i'm hoping they do
sometime soon, because for me, cordless is the Way To Go.

remote models are acceptable but have the drawback that typically they
have to mounted in the "grill" area, and on the Miata, that means
"low to the ground."  unfortunately, that's contradictory to where
you get the best radar reception (up high).  also, since the
Miata doesn't have much of a grill to speak of, i don't know how
these perform in actual practice - others may have some experience.
