The same thing happens to my Escort (protege engine w/mazda/Bosch computer). You're on the right track adjusting the base idle (with terminal ten grounded in the diagnostic box, I think, look at the hood sticker). The computer does it's best to hold the idle speed and base timing at about 700-750rpm/10-12 deg BTDC. If you have properly set the idle at a speed different form that, it will, at idle, try to pull it down to that level. Your /Our problem seems to occur when the idle speed is is set at more than 100rpm from normal, and in the process of trying to regulate the idle, the computer lets it drop WAY low, then pulls it up. The closer you you set base idle to the spec, the less dramatic the drop will be. You have to play with the idle speed, and find the sweet spot that works for a minimal fluctuation. I tried to set mine at 1000rpm, and the engine would stall if I got off the gas to clutch it! Good luck ;> Stan Whitney 71763.644@compuserve.com
