I was browsing the other day at the local Pep Boys auto parts store. (some life, huh) They used to carry Mazda oil filters but haven't lately so I was checking the other brands for the internal by-pass valve. The Purolater does NOT have one, the Fram does but it looks and feels like a plastic wafer and I was able to move it slightly with my finger so I would not speak to reliability. Plus, the Fram looked poorly put together, not as much threading to screw it on with and the seal was not attached well. Anyway, I saw the Motorcraft selection and said, I wonder.... They did list one in the book part # FL-816. I found one and opened the box and ...it is THE Mazda filter!! Same black color, same seal, same bypass valve, same identical filter except it says Motorcraft on it. It even says made in Japan. I have bought a filter for my wifes Ford Ranger from my Mazda store when I was in there once....I just asked for a Navajo filter, but I never thought I would see it go the other way. This thing may fit the Crapi or an escort I guess. Oh, it was $4.97. I don't know if I can bring myself to put something on my Miata that says Motorcraft on it but at least we now have another source for the Mazda filter. Eric Fancher Tejas Miatas Austin, Texas
