In gereral, yeah, I think it's a good idea to ask.  Give the author a good
feeling to have his stuff used.  And if he's embarassed about the work, a
change to decline further embarassement.  Some "may" want profit, but I
don't think that would happen much.   BTW, you can use anything I ever
