Subject: changing belts?

has anyone tried changing their own V-belts?
(forget the timing belt, that's another story,
i'm just talking about the 2 V-belts).

from the manual, this looks like a moderate pain
since everything is buried pretty well.
also, is this worth attempting without one of those
nifty "belt tension tester" gauges like they show
in the book, or is this not necessary?

if anyone's tried this, please supply some advice...
