John et al. - Here's the best Miata trip I've taken (although it's not especially convenient to Syracuse.) If you're on your way from Southern to Northern California, I recommend: (1) Get to Ojai. (2) 33 north over the pass to Taft. Great moutain roads. CAST: 55 - 60 MPH (3) 33 north through the oilfields to Coalinga. Flat and deserted. CAST: 80 MPH (4) 198 west to 25. Martian landscapes, lots of braking. CAST: 55 MPH. (5) 25 north to Hollister. This was on Car & Driver's 10 best. CAST: 60 MPH (6) Have a sampler at San Andreas Brewing company and have your navigator drive you home on the freeway. Average speeds are at about 7/10ths for me in the dark. Your mileage may vary. Be very careful out there, especially on 198. Many many other wonderful roads out there...I have this tape of a blue Miata going up Carmel Valley road in the early morning segment of the Great San Francisco Rallye. The driver's going like some kind of idiot... Cheers, dbk
