The reasons I use shoe laces is two-fold: One I don't have enough coat hangers lying around 
to bend up to remove the vents, and two the laces aren't going to leave marks and scratches 
behind. Any metal will leave small indentations or scratches. You might not see them, but I 
still hate damage my baby in any way!
