My $0.02, misc ramblings (to use Peter Egan's line): I happened to spot a recent Elan at a local garage. Pulled over, parked my Miata next to it, and looked it over. I liked it. Made my Miata seem big and old. It definitely is (was?) a re-thinking of the roadster, rather than a retro. I'll stick with my retro, though. Didn't know it went for $40k. I too hope Lotus survives. I always loved the Super 7. Someday I plan to buy &/or build a Caterham version, for those of you who know what I'm taking about. Maybe with Miata drivetrain? :-) Lastly, the most driving fun I ever had (in pre-Miata days) was in my friend's 66 Spitfire. Good to hear that that's what Mazda was shooting for. If only the entire front end pivoted forward to access the engine. I loved that. Sit on the front tire to work on the engine.
