From: Jim Dobbins Subject: _America's_50_Best_Touring_Roads Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1993 18:31:08 -0500
by Harley-Davidson 1987 Rand McNally & Company 64 pages Sometime in the past few weeks someone asked about this book. I saw it mentioned in the national club mag and ordered it through a local bookstore. Here's a paragraph extracted from the foreward for the book: "_America's_50_Best_Touring_Roads by Harley-Davidson is a consensus. This collection came about after Harley-Davidson asked its dealers to pick favored cycling roads in their states. From those nominated, a list of the country's fifty best touruing roads, one per state, was compiled. Then Harley riders all over America voted on those at the various Harley-Davidson dealerships and at the 1987 Bike Week in Daytona. The results determined the Ten Best out of the fifty possibilites." The book covers the 10 winners along with the 40 other contenders and has good descriptions, maps and color photos. The top 10 are: Penn-US Highway 6: Fla-US Highway 1: NC-Blue Ridge Pkwy: Ill-Great River Rd: Oh-Ohio Highway 424: Wis- Wis Highway 35: SD-US Highway 385: Co-US Highway 34:Or-Or Highway 38: Ca-Ca Highway 1 (who'da thunk it): Since the Miata is about as close to a motorcycle as any car I've owned (a Mega-Hog?) a motorcycle focused great driving roads list seems real appropriate. A mighty fine goal would be to drive all 50 roads in the book. Cheers, Jim
