That's correct.  Three letters, dash, three figures.
Old ones may consist of only five characters.
Unlike in the UK (where one can deduce the date the car was put on the road from the plate number) the plate is not tied to the car.  You can update your car and still use the same plate.

>From the reply I got from Milton Horst (horma200@ccmail.iasl.ca.boeing.com), where he describes the US mounting hardware, I can conclude that it's the same as in Belgium.
