I believe that the speaker wire connectors are the standard Ford L-shaped
connector.  I also know (though I have not used them myself) that you can
get adapter plates that wil make 5.25 inch speakers fit the openings in
the Miata doors (I know Crutchfield sells them). 

Others have reported that 6.5 inch speakers from Boston Acoustics and Polk
fit the holes just fine with only redrilling of the screw holes necessary.
I have not yet done this (though it's on my long ToDo list).
