I must be doing something wrong - I never get tailgated (usually the car behind keeps getting further and further away). Of course, now that the roads are covered in ice I find that sometimes there are people who are too close (less then 100 feet). In this case I put on the flashers. When they see this and also see the back end skitter they generally back off. As far as crush space is concerned: I was taught that the rule of thumb for when to stop is to do it when the leading edge of your hood is aligned (visually) with the bottom edge of the rear license plate of the car in front. Obviously this only works for cars of the same basic configuration (sedans), but after experience you learn how far away this tends to be and don't go trying to climb the back of the camper ahead.
